Book Your Flights To Amsterdam Now For The Festive Season

Christmas is a beautiful time of year to travel overseas and the city of Amsterdam is a wonderful choice. The festivities in the Netherlands kick off in December with the traditional Dutch feast of Saint Nicholas, “Sinterklaas”.
The arrival of Sinterklaas is in mid-November and celebrated with floats and boats sailing down the Amstel River, spectated by 400 000 people. During the river parade, pepernoten (small spiced biscuits) are handed out to everyone there. This marks the very start of the Netherlands festive season.
Thereafter, there is much to see and do across the country and the festivities that both locals and visitors can get involved in are a real treat.

What’s On In Amsterdam Over The Christmas Period

If you want to participate in the festivities, it’s best to book your flights to Amsterdam as far in advance as possible, as this particular city is a popular destination for festive season travelers.
Once you’ve arrived you will be dazzled by all there is to see and do. Below are a few suggestions for your Christmas in Amsterdam:
  • Amsterdam Light Festival (30 November - 21 January)

Light sculpture
s, projections and light art decorate the streets of the city for the entire festive season. There is a walking route for visitors to explore this spectacular site, but for the best view, opt for a canal cruise, which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Museum Square Christmas Village & Christmas Market (17 - 30 December)

The Amsterdam Museum Square is the very heart of Christmas over the festive season. Locals transform the square into a buzzing Christmas Village. Market stalls are set up around the frozen pond which is used as an ice rink. The stalls present Christmas shoppers with treats including sausages, pancakes and mulled wine.

Activities In Amsterdam Over Christmas Time

Once you’ve booked your flights to Amsterdam, you will undoubtedly want to get to know the city a little better. Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the usual sights and attractions. Below are two suggestions for holidaymakers in Amsterdam during the festive season:

  • Go on a city tour by bicycle

Amsterdam is somewhat of a fairytale over Christmas time with its streets decorated with Christmas trees and colourful lights and the beautifully lit up canals. The best way to explore the city and enjoy the ambiance is to do what the locals do - cycle around. Bicycles can be hired for the day and it provides a fun way to get around and see the sights.

  • Book tours to see all the top attractions

These include the likes of the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Heineken Beer Experience, Oude Kerk, Madame Tussauds and Leidseplein (buzzing nightlife hub).

What Happens On Christmas Day In Amsterdam?

Christmas is a little different in Amsterdam than it is around the rest of the globe. Most people do not exchange gifts on Christmas day and most children have received treats and spoiling during the Sinterklaas festival.

Christmas Eve offers a variety of services at the local churches and you will find the shops and restaurants closed. While “Second Christmas” which is on the 26th is also a national holiday, the shops and restaurants usually re-open.

While cheap flights to Amsterdam aren’t in abundance on short notice, you can find reasonably priced air fares with leading international carriers if you take the time to compare deals. A trip to Amsterdam this festive season will be well worth it! Book your flights, pack your bags and prepare for a beautiful Christmas.
